In this roundtable panel “Hearing Place,” academic scholar-artists demonstrate different ways of listening to, or “hearing” place, through creative and critical forms of expression and engagement. They will contextualize Missouri in place and time (from pre-European settlement to the near present and future). Ecomusicologist Megan Murph leads a "listening to place" activity that tunes mind and body into intentional listening; geographer Mark Palmer animates the nonhuman soundscape through “Indigi-neered” recordings of wildlife; historian Tim Langen shares the traditions of northern Missouri fiddle music; Donald Quist and Soren Larsen share their experiences of placewriting; and Janet Saidi and Tina Casagrand trade their favorite voices from River Town, a new podcast that takes listeners to the Missouri River. Soren Larsen narrates the transitions between the performances, providing additional context. Click here to meet the speakers.
